GUTU – MDC99 President and former Member of Parliament for St. Marys, Job Sikhala’s mother, Sophia Sikhala (65) died from food poisoning at her Musema home village last Tuesday evening
She had just hosted visiting neighbours at her homestead following her return from St. Marys, Chitungwiza, where she visited her son, Job. She passed on some 30 minutes after having a meal with her neighbours and friends. According to Sikhala, a post-mortem conducted at Masvingo General Hospital confirmed Sophia died of food poisoning. She was buried at her Musema Village Friday.
“I am really shocked and devastated by the untimely death of my mother who was the pillar of my political career. The fact that she passed on the same day she left my homestead in Chitungwiza makes the death tragic and most painful. My heart bleeds. On her departure, she urged me to stick to my political beliefs and run the full course in the struggle for democracy,” said Sikhala.
Villagers described the late Sophia as a strong woman who suffered untold political victimisation at the hands of Zanu (PF) since 1999. In 2002 her homestead was ransacked by the party’s militia who looted every item they could lay hands on including some $200 in cash. Hundreds of friends, neighbours and relatives attended the funeral and confessed Gutu would not be the same following the untimely passing on of Sophia, a democrat in her own right.
