Chief under fire for working with MDC

MASVINGO – Chief Murinye, Elphas Munodawafa, has been victimized by the Zanu (PF) leadership working “too closely” with the MDC-T on development projects in his area. The Chief Murinye worked with MDC-T legislator Jefferson Chitando to collect money from villagers in order to rehabilitate the Topora–Chatikobo road.
Zanu (PF) leaders hatched a smear campaign and accused Chief Murinye of embezzling the funds. “It is baffling to us that why should a Chief collect some money from villagers. He has turned out to be a local authority and he is working closely with MDC-T, which is not acceptable in Zanu (PF),” said a Zanu (PF) official identified only as Togara.
The party has since approached Ignatius Chombo, the Minister of Local Government, to “take action” against the Chief. Murinye said it was unfortunate that the whole issue had been politicized unnecessarily. “I received a threatening telephone call from a Zanu (PF) member telling me that some authorities had ordered everything to be frozen as I was working closely with the MDC-T.
“I will wait until the authorities (Zanu PF) give me the green light to go ahead with the developmental project,” he said sadly.
