The MDC-T is breathing fire over the conduct of the police force which they said was now a threat to the Global Political Agreement, which gave birth to the inclusive government built on shifting sands.

MDC-T secretary-general and Finance Minister Tendai Biti last week wrote to Jomic accusing the police of being “blatantly biased against his party”.

Biti said the MDC-T was unhappy with the manner police were investigating the murder of their member, Inspector Petros Mutedza, who was reportedly stoned to death in Glen View, Harare recently.

The party said up to 30 of its activists were nabbed in a police crackdown in the high-density suburb, but only 20 have been brought to court so far.

Of these, 12 were granted bail ranging between $300 and $1 000 last Friday.

High Court judge, Justice Tendai Uchena, however, denied bail to eight other MDC-T activists, ruling them unsuitable candidates for bail.

Biti said statements by senior police officers over the alleged cop’s murder were “clearly meant to exert undue influence on the justice delivery system of the country”.

“Most disturbing is the fact that before any serious investigations could be instituted to ascertain the circumstances around which this unfortunate incident took place, the police in their wisdom or lack of it rushed to the public media and blamed this on the MDC,” Biti said in the letter to Jomic.

“We find it difficult to comprehend why the police choose to charge, try, convict and sentence our members in the media before conducting thorough investigations. Also disturbing is the statement that was issued by one Inspector Andrew Phiri at the funeral parade of the late Mutedza in which he sought to be the complainant, the prosecutor and the judge at the same time when he alluded to the fact that ‘those behind this murder should be hanged.

“We find this statement and many other utterances around this incident from senior police officers to be full of malice and contempt of our party and clearly meant to exert undue influence on the justice delivery system of the country. It is clear and unfortunate that some Zanu PF elements masquerading as police officers are using this incident to decimate the MDC in Glen View.”
