The MDC-T’s top leadership last week added its voice to the raging debate over police roadblocks, and accused the law enforcement agents of being “too heavy-handed”.
The party’s national organizing secretary Nelson Chamisa said the meeting, which was attended by the MDC-T’s top provincial leadership, was meant to strategise for the forthcoming general elections which Zanu PF leader President Robert Mugabe wants held this year.

Chamisa said the party leaders debated several issues, among them the proliferation of police roadblocks, State media’s alleged biased coverage, State security agents’ infiltration into the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) secretariatand harassment of party members by a suspected Zanu PF vigilante group, Chipangano .

“Police officers are supposed to be for the people, for the country and for the law. The roadblocks are just too much,” said Chamisa.

“The leadership complained of police heavy-handedness on the roads. We believe we have police officers who should do their work but it appears they are overwhelmed.”

There has been a public outcry over the heavy police presence on the country’s roads with Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara telling Parliament last week that Cabinet had tasked Home Affairs co-minister Kembo Mohadi to investigate the matter and reduce the number of roadblocks, especially along highways.

“The Chipangano issue also came out from the meeting. They are causing anguish and agony to the people,” said Chamisa.

Chamisa said the provincial leaders raised a number of issues, including the involvement of State operatives in the ZEC secretariat and the “hell” brought by Chipangano, a militant group aligned to Zanu PF.

“The media reform issue is the single largest threat, so is the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission issue and the issue again of institutions of violence. They remain a threat because they poison the social and political environment,” Chamisa said.
